What
Is Cucuro Adventures?
"Cucuro" (pronounced
choo-choo-row) means peak in Nepali. In Nepali culture the
mountains are the home of the gods, and a place of reverence.
Cucuro Adventures
provides you with unique physical adventures in mountain ranges
around the world: the Himalayas, the Andes, and Patagonia.
You will find our trips both physically challenging and completely
rewarding.
Cucuro Adventures
focuses on the needs of a growing group of people who are
interested in similar things: the mountains, adventure, physical
challenge, enjoying life, and the growth and perspective this
can bring. Whether it is a trekking, climbing, biking, or
mountaineering expedition, you will get to know yourself and
the others whom you share the experience with.
All trips are the
result of many years of diverse experiences, interesting adventures,
and solid relationship building. Our guides and local partners
are chosen because they are the best and most professional
organizations running these trips.
Together with our
partners Cucuro Adventures is setting new ethical and environmental
standards for the industry. We are pleased to be able to work
with these people and provide you with consistently top quality
service.

Trekking
vs. Climbing
"Trekking " is
the word used in Europe and Asia to describe what we might
call "Backpacking". There are however, a few, subtle differences.
American style backpacking often involves carrying heavy packs
on your back. Trekking usually involves having a staff of
porters and/or yaks or ponies to carry the heavy loads through
often very demanding terrain. During the day you will need
to carry a small daypack containing items needed during the
day: water, warm layers, rain jacket, sunscreen, camera, etc.
The staff will safely transport all of your other belongings
from one camp to the next.
The other main
distinction is that trekking can often involve some minor
climbing and cross country travel. It is an expedition that
has been done before. Whereas we often make a clear distinction
between backpacking and climbing, trekking can blur that boundary.
For the purposes of choosing a trip we make this distinction
between Trekking and Climbing.
Trekking does
not involve the use of ropes and technical equipment and does
not require any knowlege of climbing techniques to enjoy and
complete the itinerary. Climbing trips will require a certain
amount of familiarity with ropes, climbing equipment and techniques,
though the guiding and safety is our department. To what degree
you must be familiar will be outlined in the trip description
or by our staff.

How
we do things: a note on visiting
the developing world.
As a traveler
or tourist visiting a country for only a short time, it is
easy for one to come away with an amazing experience and not
worry about the overwhelming issues that that country is struggling
with. It is easier still to be unaware of your impact on those
same issues whether environmental, cultural or economic. Cucuro
adventures seeks to bring adventurers to these places in a
responsible manner. That means that we pay close attention
to our impact on the environments and cultures that we visit
and set our standards higher than the rest of the industry.
Adventure travel and eco-tourism can be done in such a way
that there is equal cultural exchange, preservation and care
for the natural environment, and respect for the needs of
those who live there. Cucuro seeks to raise the industry bar
in these ways:
- Educating our
clients as to cultural and social concerns.
- Seeking to understand
the ongoing needs and concerns of the areas we travel to.
- Dealing with
locals in a respectful manner.
- Packing out
all waste including so-called "burnable" waste.
- Restricting
campsites to areas of least impact. Including toilet arrangements.
With particular attention to water sources.
- Setting a maximum
on group size.
- Paying a liveable
and appropriate wage to those in our employ. Including porters.
- Being responsible
for our local staff in the field including outfitting them
appropriately and insuring them against accident or injury.
- Taking an active
role in the development of the country through local Non-governmental
agencies or NGO's, such as S.E.E.D.S., a local organization
benefitting Nepalis in the areas of health and education.
- Establishing
a tone of respect among our groups to enhance our cultural
exchange.
- Exclusive use
of kerosene (as opposed to wood) for all cooking, including
our local staff.
In these ways and
more we can ensure that our presence is a benefit to our host
countries and not just another organization seeking to make
some money at the expense of many people. We are proud to
be on the cutting edge of the industry and believe that it
will enhance you experience as a participant on one of our
trips.
